The 2nd Pangyo Autonomous Motor Show, which introduces the present and future of self-driving vehicles, was held at the Pangyo 2nd Techno Valley in Seongnam City, Gyeonggi-do Province on Nov. 15.

The event consisted of a variety of programs, including autonomous test-driving, automotive technology competition for universities, LEGO self-driving car competition for elementary and secondary school students, and a match between a self-driving car and a human-driven car. Since last year, it is known as the only autonomous motor show in the world.

On the first day of the opening ceremony, a large crowd of people, including the general public, researchers and developers of self-driving cars, filled the arena. They were there to watch the main event of the show, autonomous test-driving.

Choi Ho-seung, a member of Team SAVE of Sungkyunkwan University, said, “It seems that the self-driving car technology will soon be deployed on a commercial scale, as soon as the environment becomes applicable. Self-driving requires a communication system that enables active flow of data, and I think this is the strength of Korean technology.”

Kim Il-lan, who said she came to watch the motor show with her children to present a new experience for them, said, “If the errors of the managing system are minimized and problems of sudden braking is solved, I can see a future, where the driver can also freely spend time with the fellow riders.” Yet, she also expressed some concerns, “Driving is directly related with life and death. Security should definitely be guaranteed at its best.”

Another visitor Goo In Hee, who is in his sixties, showed his expectations for the future development of self-driving cars. He said, “I am very interested in self-driving cars, because I feel like it would become difficult for me to drive a car if I become older.”

The Korean government is pushing for various policies to accomplish Level 4 and 5 of the autonomous driving by 2022. By next year, the security standards and insurance system for the commercialization of self-driving cars will be prepared. Also, the construction of the world’s best autonomous driving testing ground, ‘K-City,’ is expected to be finished by this year. 5G network service that enables large data to flow without overloading will be established at the testing ground. The ‘smart road’ infrastructure and precise road map, in which real-time information is exchanged between vehicles and roads, are also aimed to be set in 2020.

If the government’s plans are implemented in a timely manner, along the lines of its roadmap, self-driving car will be observed in the streets of Korea from 2030.
